Tourist visa for China as a Nepali citizen

Hi, I hold a Nepali passport and would like to apply visa for the first time as a tourist in mainland China (for a 10-day trip). I do not have friends living in mainland China but have a friend living in Hong Kong (whom I'm going to meet in mainland China). Do I need anyone to write me an invitation letter? If so and I don't have any mainland Chinese friends, can my Hong Kong friend write me the letter?
Thank you for your attention.

Nyma, invitation letter is not necessary. If you do not have it, round-trip airtickets and hotel reservation are needed. Plus, as i konw, your Hong Kong friend may write the letter, but his or her copies of the Hong Kong ID card and passort are needed.
