Will the 144 hour visa free travel pass cover the times in Beijing/ Tianjin before and after cruise?

Could I use 144 hours free visa for Canadians for the following itinerary: Hong Kong to Beijing . Stay 2 nights in Beijing before the cruise from Tianjin, Tianjin to Japan then back to Tianjin. Fly out from Beijing to Hong Kong right after the cruise.

Will the free visa activate when i enter Beijing from Hong Kong and end when i leave on the Japanese cruise? And then activate again when i return from the cruise to Tianjin for another 144 hours?

You are fine and you can definitely use 144 hours visa free twice. Of course, during your second leg you can use 24 hours TWOV instead of 144 hours visa free because you will probably stay in Beijing area noticeably less than 24 hours. If this is not the case, you can apply for 144 hours visa free, of course.

This is what really interests Chinese authorities:

Hong Kong - Tianjin (wider Beijing area) - Japan - fine

Japan - Tianjin (wider Beijing area) - Hong Kong - fine

Just don't bother yourself with the details regarding the activation and deactivation of this convenience. Simply speaking, it activated at the time of your arrival and it is deactivated immediately when you exit mainland China.
