will the 144 hour visa free travel pass cover the times in beijing/ tianjin before

Could I use 144 hours free visa for Canadians for the following itinerary: Hong Kong to Beijing . Stay 2 nights in Beijing before the cruise from Tianjin, Tianjin to Japan then back to Tianjin. Fly out from Beijing to Hong Kong right after the cruise.Will the free visa activate when i enter Beijing from Hong Kong and end when i leave on the Japanese cruise? And then activate again when i return from the cruise to Tianjin for another 144 hours?
