About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From Hong Kong to Yangshuo by Train for 3 days

We fly into HK & then want to go independently on the fast train to Guilin region for 3-4 days & then return to HK.
Will this plan work for a 72 or 144hr free transit or is the free transit only possible entering China by air?

Only possible by air. Also you need to be going to a third country and Guilin does not have many international flights.
