About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Guangzhou - to Hong Kong

I am unclear. If I fly into Guangzhou to stay with a friend and leave within 72 hrs to enter Hong Kong via train for example, with a hotel booked in Hong Kong to act as confirmation, would I be eligible for the 72 hour free transit?

It only works when you fly to HK from Guangzhou.
