About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise ship arrival in Shanghai, same day airport departure. Is Visa required?

We will be arriving into Shanghai via cruise ship, taking ship-sponsored post-cruise tour with airport drop-off and same day flight for return to USA. Is a Visa required? Thank you.

That's fine as long as your flight leaving Shanghai does not also travel through an airport in the country of the last port of call before Shanghai. For example ship goes Korea > Japan > Shanghai your flight from Shanghai must not make a landing in Japan.
