About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

HKG-Chengdu-HKG in 24 hours

Can I use the 24 hours free transit to fly from HKG to Chengdu and back to HKG the day after?

You need to continue to a third country before returning through Hong Kong. Otherwise you need to apply for a visa.
