Best mode of transportation

I have 10 days to travel from Xian right up to Jiayuguan and back to Xian. I want to see all the historical and scenic places. How best should I arrange my transport to visit these places. Thank you.

I think the best way is to have a self-driving trip or take a silk road tour with a private guide and driver.
