About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Made it to China

Just wanted to say that although I’m not entirely still sure we needed visas for our short stay, I’m glad we got them. Going through customs was a breeze with it. I saw a sign that if you didn’t have a visa, one would have to register with the local police dept. It’s all pretty confusing but if you can get entry permit...it’s best to go stand in line at your local consulate. Just my opinion. Good luck.

For a US citizen (which you may be, based on your confusion between "customs" and "immigration") it's relatively easy and affordable to get a 10-year Chinese visa. Not everyone has that privilege, and transit without visa can be a simple, non-confusing and free option for them. And every foreigner has to register with the local police department, visa or not (it's usually done automatically by your hotel).
