About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

San Francisco -> Shanghai -> Hong Kong -> San Francisco

Is there any requirement of how long the 3rd region's stay has to be? Or just that the traveler does indeed go to a 3rd region before return? Thank you!!

There's no minimum stay required as long as you leave to a 3rd country or region. Your route is fine (assuming your passport qualifies and your SFO-SHA flight doesn't stop in Hong Kong or mainland China).
