72 hour free transit. I've got russian passport

and my son has a us passport. We have a layover for 27 hours in Beijing. Wanted to get a hotel room but now I confused do we need to apply for a visa for 140$ or its free?? Do we need to fill up the application with photo and have all the documents ready from the list above??

You are eligible for 144h twov in Beijing, and you can apply for the free transit which is free of charge by showing your passport and onward tickets to a third country.
