do i need a visa? hi, i have two separate reservations with two different airlines

and have been told that two can not combine due to different airlines. I also have been told from the united air agent that i have to go through the custom and need a visa but i will be only at the shanghai airport 3-5 hours before my flight to Seoul. am i not qualify for 24 or 72 hours visa free transit? can you please give me some answer? I have a feeling that united air agent had a wrong info. I am Korean passport holder and US resident.

1. Houston to Shanghai(round trip) - united, purchased
arriving PVG on 4/1, 1:40pm

2. Shanghai to Seoul, Korea( round trip) - Asian air, mileage purchase
depart to ICN on 4/1 4:20pm

If the travel would be Houston-Shanghai-Seoul-Shanghai-Houston, you can use the free transit in Shanghai twice. Separate tickets would be fine.
