3 nights in Shanghai do I need a visa

Please help, the information is so confusing!

I am arriving in Shanghai staying 1 night picking up a 7 night cruise to Japan from Shanghai arriving back to Shanghai staying for 2 nights leaving for Singapore, on UK & Irish passport, do we need visa or can we use the 144 twov? if yes how do you apply and what if is is refused?
