About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

144-hour visa-free transit in Shanghai

I'm a U.S. citizen and plan to visit relatives in Taipei and Hangzhou. Which of the following qualifies for visa exemption:
(1) U.S. --> Taipei --> Hangzhou --> U.S.
(2) U.S. --> Hangzhou --> Taipei --> U.S.

I don't think there are any non-stop flights Hangzhou to/from the USA. Most of them stop elsewhere in China thus only allows 24 hour stop in mainland china.
