About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China. I have a US passport and my GF have a Mexican passport.

There's a 20 hours layover from San Francisco (US) to Delhi (India). Then 10 days later on our way back from India to the US there is a 9 hours layover.
We are planning roam around downtown Shanghai in between flights.
Do we still beed a VISA? It's less than 30 hours total and our countries are listed above. Please advise.

You do not need visas although entry to the country is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Also, as of February last year Shanghai would not let those without hotel confirmations to leave the airport, so your chances are better if you can provide one. This requirement does not apply if you are switching between terminals or transferring to another airport within the area (e.g., Pudong to Hongqiao).

We book the hotel already. It's the same I always use, it's around the corner.
I've been in shanghai about tree times, but it was a long time ago.
Thanks!
