About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

Do I qualify for 144 hour visa? I am a US citizen resident in UK.

I’m travelling from UK to Shanghai via Hong Kong, spending 5 days in Shanghai, then flying to Hong Kong and then back to London. Do I qualify for 144 hour visa?

If the trip would be UK-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong-London, you won't qualify for free transit. You are supposed to apply for a visa beforehand.
