About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

U.S. Passport. BKK to SFO through WUH.

Pretty sure the article answered my question, but just making sure. We are U.S. citizens flying from Bangkok to San Francisco with an 8 hour layover in Wuhan. Would we be ok to leave the airport for a few hours to explore without a visa?

What other airports will you be traveling through Wuhan does not have non-stop flights to SFO. As long as its less than 24 hours from scheduled landing in first Chinese city and scheduled departure from last Chinese city then you can do the transit. Whether you can leave the airport on transit it depends on immigration discretion.

China Southern has a direct flight. Unless my itinerary is wrong. I might need to check with them. Do I need to fill out any paper work for the transit to be valid or can I just leave the airport if it is only going to be for a few hours?

You are right it's only twice a week, I found it after the fact. Yes that is valid for 24 hour transit without Visa.

I have not transited Wuhan yet but I think it's same as beijing and Shanghai, you have to fill out a blue form at the 24/144 hour visa free transit desk to apply to leave the airport. There is also a yellow form that they should hopefully pass out on the plane that you will need to show to passport control after you complete the process with the blue form.
