Canada - Shanghai - Thailand, Thailand - SH - Canada

I am flying from Canada to SH and stay there for 5 days and then fly to Thailand. My return ticket will start from Thailand, lay over in SH for 12 hours and then return to Canada. I wonder does the 144 hour free visa work in this situation?
