About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit without visa authority

Can my wife and I use the 72 hour free transit if we fly into Shanghai stay for three nights leave Shanghai before the 72 hours ends then flying to Tokyo. We will also be flying from Tokyo back to US stopping in Shanghai for 1 hour layover. While in Shanghai for three days would like to take train to Beijing to visit the Great Wall. Thanks

If you want to visit both Shanghai and Beijing you need a visa. 144 hours transit without visa allows transit in Shanghai, or Beijing, but not both. By the way, 72 hours has been discontinued in both areas.

Hello, I'm wondering if my dad and I could do US to Beijing to Hong Kong to Shanghai to US? Thank you for your help. You mentioned 72 is gone, and now only 144 is applicable? Quin

He has a stop in a third country in between which is fine, while you want to do a back-to-back visit which is not. Your solution is 1) abandon your trip to Beijing, 2) change your ticket to Tokyo to stop in Beijing instead or 3) get a visa for $140 per person.
