Round Trip to Shanghai From USA ... With Separate Ticket in the middle

I would like to purchase a round trip ticket to Shanghai from the US. Visit Shanghai Disneyland for two days. Fly from Shanghai to Thailand on the 3rd day (with a different round trip ticket). Fly back from Thailand to Shanghai 5 days later. Stay in Shanghai for just for flight connection back to the US on the first round trip ticket. Would this qualify for the 72 hour visa? Another way of stating this Day 1 DEN -> PVG on Ticket 1; Day 3 PVG to BKK on Ticket 2; Day 8 BKK to PVG on Ticket 2; Day 8 PVG -> DEN on Ticket 1 ... would this qualify?
