We want to visit Kunming and Dali this summer.

Is it better to visit The Clay Forest from Dali or from Kunming? What is the best way to get there?

Do you mean the Stone Forest in Kunming? If yes, then you can take a regular bus form Kunming East Coach Station to there. It operates from 8:00 to 18:00 and costs CNY34.

No I mean the Yuanmo Clay Forest... it seems on the map as if it lies between Kunming and Dali... so I want to know from which city it would be best to go there

It should be Yuanmou Clay forest and it is closer from Kunming. It takes about 2 hours form Northwest Passenger Station to there and costs about CNY70. The bus operates from 8:00 to 18:30 with an interval about 1 hour.
