About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong --> Beijing --> Hong Kong?

I assume this is not possible, but if I have a RT flight from Hong Kong to Beijing that spans less than 72 hours, will this visa exception apply?

That is obviously not possible without a visa. It's a visit to China and not a transit.
