About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We fly to Shanghai, spend night in hotel and then board Queen Mary 2, not intending to get off.

We have previously visited Beijing and done extensive tours all around the area. Therefore we do not intend getting off the ship in Tianjin. Will a 144 hour via be sufficient? If not, what is the cost of a visa for such a short (i.e. one
night) stay?

It does not matter if you get off the ship or not. If you stop at Shanghai and Tianjin you will not qualify for 144 hours transit without visa. You must get a visa. The cost depends on your nationality and the speed of processing, but for a British passport it will cost you at least around GBP150 each.
