Travelling on Australian passport and transiting GUANGZHOU and URUMQI

I have read confusing information regarding transiting Urumqi for longer than 2 hours, can you please clarify.

Travelling on Australian passport and transiting GUANGZHOU and URUMQI on my way to ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN. The total transit times between arrival GUANGZHOU and URUMQI does not exceed 24 hours.
Is a visa required or am I eligible for 24 hour transit visa free?

Thank you!

Urumqi has its own restriction. Two hours is the maximum or the entire itinerary becomes non-compliant.

Yes multiple entry L visa. You can try requesting a 10 year visa. I don't see much about it for Australians, but I think its now available since your country started granting 10 year visas for Chinese nationals.
