About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Can I use the 72hr transit visa?

I have bought I round trip ticket from AirCanada to Fly from the USA to Taiwan with a stop in Canada, returning 12 days later from Shanghai to the USA with a stop in Canada. I will be booking separate tickets to travel to Thailand and Hong Kong, meaning I will be flying from either Thailand or Hong Kong into Shanghai to catch the return flight, hopefully 24-48hrs after arriving to Shanghai. Can I use the 72 hour free transit visa? (Traveling with a USA passport).

Yes separate tickets is fine. Just make sure you actually fly to Hong Kong / Thailand. Then you can stay up to 144 hours in Shanghai each time (72 hours was extended to 144 a few years ago)
