About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2 layovers in China. Do I qualify for a 144 hour visa or do I have to apply for a tourist visa?

1st flight: Houston China with 36 hour layover then fly to Bangkok
Returning flight: Bangkok to China with 14 hour layover, then leaving to Houston.
