About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 vs. 144

US citizen on simple roundtrip itinerary

DTW to PEK
PEK to DTW

Am I eligible for the free transit and if so, would it be 72 or 144 hours?

You are obviously not eligible for transit without visa because you're not in transit. That's a visit to China.
