Voluntary Work in Schools

I am hoping to do volunteer English support in schools over a 12 month period. What visa should I apply for? I can get referrals from teachers I have worked with before!

The only legal way to work in China is to apply for a Z which is cumbersome, expensive and time-consuming. Working with any other visa will in theory violate immigration laws although the consequence will range from nothing at all to downright disastrous. Last time a Canadian didn't have her paperwork in order and was used as leverage in diplomatic spats.
