Visa if you are staying 24 hours in Shanghai? - We are US citizens

We are United States citizens and arrive at 6pm, and leave on our cruise ship the next day at 10am. We will stay overnight in a hotel. Do we need a Visa or does it fall into the 72 hour rule with no Visa? Please advise.
