Do I need a visa? What type of visa?

I am from the UK travelling to China in August with the following itinerary:

fly to Shanghai - 3 night stay in Shanghai.
8 day cruise from Shanghai, around Japan and back to Shanghai
fly from Shanghai to Beijing
3 night stay in Beijing
fly home from Beijing to UK

Can somebody advise on need for visa/type of entry permit please?

You need a visa for the way back to UK, and you can apply for a 2-year one which costs the same as single-entry one. The 2-year one will allow you to enter and exit China for multiple times within 2 years.
