About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I will be travelling from Toronto to Beijing and transit in Beijing for 72 hours and then flying to

Both flights from Toronto to Beijing and Beijing to Singapore are separate airlines and tickets . Do I need a China Visa or I could qualify under the 72 hours free transit?

Separate tickets are fine as long as your route qualifies.
