Can Hainan be regarded as a third region?

Hi,
If I fly to Hainan from Canada transiting in Guangzhou (<24 hr stopover) and stay in Hainan for a week, then fly to Guangzhou for 72 hours, followed by a flight to Hong Kong/Macau then back to Canada. Will I need to apply for a Chinese entry permit?

Does Hainan count as a third region similar to what was described below? "In addition, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are regarded as a third region in terms of transit issues. "

Hainai cannot be regarded as a third region. You should apply for a visa for that.
