About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Is this regarded as visa free (Australia/China/Japan), or does the transfer city count as the point of origin?

For example, Sydney—Shanghai on Cathay via Hong Kong (no stay--remaining airside, not going through custom control), then back through Hong Kong (no stay, as before) to connect to Tokyo. The trip is Sydney—Shanghai—Tokyo, with a 48-hour stay in Shanghai. Many thanks.
