Entering Zhuhai through bridge from Hong Kong with US passport

I am planning to visit Hong Kong soon and would like to ride the bridge between Hong Kong and Zhuhai. If I do not want to enter the town (I just want to ride the bus across the bridge and back), would this be possible, and would I need to pay the fee still?

There is no VOA facility in the immigration building so you can't enter Zhuhai even if you want to when not holding a visa. However Zhuhai and Macau share the same immigration building so it's possible to clear Macanese immigration as you won't need a visa. (It looks like you can't turn around without passing Mainland Chinese or Macanese immigration.)
