About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is 72 TWOV applicable if my flight home has stop over

We left China to Hong Kong not realising our exit permit would be stamped. We had a single entry visa. We now have to get back to shanghai to fly back to Sydney. Our flight from shanghai to Sydney has a 5 hour layover in changsha. Would we be able to use the 72 TWOV?

You won't qualify for the 72h twov because of the layover in Changsha. Try to apply for a visa beforehand.

Thanks so much for your reply! So even if I don't leave the airport in changsha I still wouldn't qualify?

Thanks. Are you able to share more information about the 24 hour twov? How does it work? Where is the 24 hours valid for shanghai or changsha?

24 hours in total, from scheduled arrival time at the first airport in China to scheduled departure time from the second.

If for example I land in Shanghai 3.30pm 1st jan 2019 and I get a flight that leaves Shanghai at 6.30pm 1st Jan 2019 but it has a stop over in xi'an then leaves xian 5.30pm 2nd Jan 2019 to Sydney, will I be able to use the 24 hour transit Visa? When does the 24 hours start ticking?

3.30 pm january 1 till 5.30 pm january 2 is a total of 26h.

The 24h start from scheduled arriving time in China to your scheduled departure time.

That won't work because it's 26 hours. You count from scheduled arrival time in Shanghai to scheduled departure time from Xi'an.

You may need to apply for a visa in Hong Kong, I'm not sure how long it will take. It will probably be cheaper than all the change fees and increased last minute ticket costs
