About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Am I eligible?I’m a US citizen traveling from Chicago to Shanghai on Dec 28th.

I have a 20 hour layover in Shanghai (arrive at Pudong), then a flight to Kunming (leave at Shanghai Hongqiao) which is a 3 hour layover ending in Ho Chi Minh Vietnam. Am I eligible for the 72 hour twov dispite taking a domestic flight in China to get to Vietnam? All through China Eastern. I’m concerned since I’ll need to swap airports regardless of the visa status. Thanks!!!

You should be concerned as you are not eligible for 72/144-hour transit, and since your total time in China is more than 24 hours you are not eligible for the 24-hour transit either. Hence you need a visa.

You need a visa, or you must change your flight to a non-stop Shanghai to Vietnam.
