About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I qualify for a 72 hour visa free transit?

Entering Shanghai via U.S on the (December )28th (6pm) and leave on the 31st (5pm) then enter China again in Beijing via Seoul, South Korea on January 14th and leave on the 17th back to the U.S. Should I apply for entry permit? I believe I qualify for the 72 hour transit free.

USA > Shanghai > Seoul is allowed up to 144 hours in Shanghai
Seoul > Beijing > USA is allowed another 144 hours in Beijing.
