About:China Transit Visa

Which visa do I need? Do I get this at Shanghai (PVG) once I arrive?

I am coming from Canada to Phuket with a 12 hr layover in Shanghai (PVG) airport. Wanting to leave the airport to tour around for the day, do I need the 24hr twov or 72hr (somethings ive read say you cant leave the airport on a 24hr visa free transit?) im a little confused and want to sort this all out before trying to when there. Am I able to get these at the airport upon arrival as long as i have my passport valid for 6 months after travel date and my onward ticket to phuket? I do not want to be stuck in the airport for 12 hrs so want to make sure I am clear and have everything needed to tour for the day before my connecting flight.

As your layover time is within 24 hours, you can apply for the 24h twov. Since February, Shanghai no longer allows people with layovers for less than 24 hours to clear immigration regardless of nationality. Some reported that bringing a hotel reservation will help. You can have a try.

So would it be better then just to apply for a regular visa, would that then allow me through?

Yes. You can apply for a regular visa, and you are allowed to leave the airport to explore the city.
