About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling from USA to Beijing to Shanghai by air and then board ship to Japan does it qualify?

Will be flying from Houston, Texas (USA) to Beijing on China Air, then transfer to Shanghai again on China Air to be transferred to port to sail to Japan on a cruise all on the same day of arrival. Do I need a visa or does it qualify for the 24/72 or 144 hours free transit?
