About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Return flight on standby Ticket

I am flying back to the UK from Australia via Shanghai. My flight from Australia to Shanghai is with Malaysian Airlines and my flight from Shanghai to UK is with Virgin which was a separate booking. My Virgin Flight is on
a standby ticket, but I am fairly confident I will get on the flight. I do not intend leaving Shanghai airport but as the bookings are separate and my flight is standby, will have to go through immigration to collect my luggage and then check my luggage in at the Virgin desk. If so will I be alright on the 24hr direct transit, or will I have to apply for a 72hr TWOV?

You do not qualify for transit without visa and you will be denied boarding at your origin. You must have a confirmed onward ticket from China and standby is strictly not allowed.

In that case you will be fine. The rule of thumb is that you must depart Mainland China on a confirmed ticket.
