About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Standby Passenger

I fly nonrevenue standby through the American Airlines employee benefit program. I will have travel dates through the American Airlines website, but not a "ticket" until the day of the flight. I do not have a Visa for China.
If I fly USA - Shanghai - Canada, will a standby itinerary suffice?

You will need both tickets at the time of your check-in in US for your flight to China. Simply speaking, if you have just one ticket for the leg US - China, you cannot prove that you will be in transit. So, if you cannot produce a ticket for your second leg, Shanghai - Canada, at the time of your check-in, you will be denied boarding in US.

The only way to travel using 144 hour visa free transit is to have all the necessary tickets at your first point of departure or to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.
