About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transition?

Is transition to a third country necessary to apply this rule? Can one travel from the country A to Shanghai and then come back at country A again? And of course to stay less then 144 hours?

Of course you must be in transit. A visit to China requires a visa.
