About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From US to Shanghai Consulate informed

Hi - is there a place or someone we are supposed to alert / notify that we are coming? A government official? It seems I read somewhere that we were supposed to let a consulate (?) know that we were coming.

If you have one landing in China in transit to a third country US passport is eligible for 144 hour twov. You just need to let the airline check-in agent know that you are doing the transit. Once you arrive visit the 24/144 hour Transit counter to apply for the temporary stay permit.

If you are not in transit then you need to apply for a tourist visa prior to departure.
