About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

stopover counted as same country?

I will have flight from LA (US) to Beijing (China), then Beijing to Chicago (US, 1.5 hours stopover) to Toronto (Canada). Do I qualify for 144-h twov in Beijing?Thanks
