Do I Qualify for a Visa Free Transit?

I have a US passport, and I’m traveling from US to Beijing, touring Beijing for 4 days, then flying from Beijing to Philippines. After 2 weeks, I’m traveling from Philippines to Beijing (stopover at airport only), then flying from Beijing back to the US. I visited the Chinese embassy today to ask if I need a tourist or transit g. They said to call the airlines (Air China) for an answer. ??? I called Air China, and they said to ask the Chinese embassy. ??? How can I know for sure that I do or do not need entry permit? I’m afraid of landing in Beijing, and being told to go back to the US.

You don't need a visa as you can use free transit in Beijing in both ways. You can check the information from Timatic, an IATA database which airlines use.
