About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

travelling to New Zealand from UK via Wuhan

I am thinking of making a trip to see my son in Wuhan, possibly then my son and I would travel onto Auckland to see other son. I don't think there are direct flights from Wuhan to Auckland, would I be able to travel on a 72 hour non visa arrangement?

The 72h twov in Wuhan just work if you don't have another stop in China.
If there's no nonstop flight from Wuhan to Auckland, you definitely need a nonstop flight from Wuhan to another country (incl. HK and Macau) first.
