If your travel route is from Hong Kong to Beijing and back to Hong Kong, I am afraid that you are not qualified for the 144-hour visa exemption. According to the policy, your starting place and the destination should be different countries or regions out of Mainland China.

As far as I know, the route from Hong Kong to Taibei with a stop at Beijing meets the application requirements. While there is more than one requirement to apply for the visa exemption in China. For example, your nationality should be included in the list of 53 qualified countries and you should have bought the ticket to Taibei with confirmed seat and date and so on. What's more, the region of Taiwan also offers free-visa policy for some countries. For the detailed and accurate information, I kindly suggest you contact the airport immigration inspection directly.
