Stop in Shanghai in different / separate booking

Hi

I have a US passport and will be in Shanghai for 48 hours before continuing to Germany. My flights are on separate / different booking because my Shanghai to Germany flight was booked and paid by my friend through her work. I am meeting the friend in Shanghai and we will be flying to Germany on the same flight. Can I avail of the 72-hour free transit?
