Two layovers in mainland China- do I need a visa?

Hi, I am a US citizen flying from Nepal to Guangzhou, China, then Wuhan, China, then to San Francisco. Do I need a visa for two layovers in China that are less than 24 hours total? I do not plan on leaving the airport.

If I do need entry permit, can I obtain one in Kathmandu Nepal?
