If I buy a ticket to Beijing with a layover in China and am planing a round trip journey to Japan departing and returning to Beijing, can I use a 144 hour transit visa?

I am afraid that you may not be able to apply for the 144-hour visa free transit if you have a layover in other city of China before landing in Beijing. However, for your second journey, if you fly from Japan to Beijing and then to a third country like USA, then you are qualified for the visa free transit.
