Actually, these two cities are suitable for travelling all year around. But considering the extreme temperatures in summer and winter in Beijing, I suggest you visit Beijing in May, June, September or October and March to May or October to November for Shanghai trip. If possible, avoid the holidays and summer vacation with travel crowds.
